Alcohol Affects Both Sexes Differently

Do you drink more than you probably should? Do you find that your drinking is impacting your life in a negative way? Do you have a habit of drinking alcohol every day, or every few days? Do you forget things that happen when you drink? Alcohol can be a very dangerous substance, and not one that should be taken lightly. Alcoholism is a very real disease, and you very well could be susceptible to it. And though everyone could be at risk for being an alcoholic, scientists have found that booze affects males and females in different ways.

There isn’t a lot of research on female alcoholism, as historically men were the ones who were assumed to be struggling with their drinking habits. But studies have found a few important differences:

•Women get drunk faster. When they drink the same amount of alcohol, women will be proportionately more drunk than men.

•Women are more likely to develop cirrhosis of the liver. And it comes on quicker than it does for males.

And though female alcoholism is 1.9 percent in America (versus 5.5 percent for men), it’s growing much faster for women. In fact, researchers found that among young adults, the rates of alcoholism were the same for both sexes.
