Medication Assisted Treatment

WHAT IS IT?

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program at Retreat Behavioral Health utilizes pharmacological options approved by the FDA in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies for the treatment of Substance Use Disorders (SUD).

NALTREXONE

Naltrexone (Revia) is a medication designed to help suppress cravings for both opioids and alcohol. Naltrexone is available in both an oral and injectable option. The oral form is called Revia, comes in two strengths, and is taken once daily. The injectable is called Vivitrol and is given by a healthcare provider once every 28 days. Both forms of this medication help decrease cravings for alcohol and completely block the absorption of opioids.

CAMPRAL

Campral (Acamprosate) helps to restore the normal function of the altered alcoholic brain that has been changed by long-term alcohol misuse. This medication is an oral form and requires two pills three times per day with meals.

ANTABUSE

Antabuse (Disulfiram) blocks an enzyme that is involved in processing alcohol. This medication should never be mixed with alcohol-containing products because it can lead to unpleasant and severe symptoms. Antabuse comes in oral form with two strengths and is taken once daily.

BUPRENORPHINE

Buprenorphine is a controlled medication that is a partial opioid agonist, so it can both activate and block opioid receptors in the brain. Buprenorphine comes in three main forms: oral sublingual, subcutaneous injectable, and patch. The oral version is best known as Subutex or the combination version of buprenorphine and naloxone which is called Suboxone. The injectable version is called Sublocade. The patch is called Butrans and is only indicated for chronic pain, not for MAT. Subutex/Suboxone are used generally as sublingual absorption once daily but can be adjusted for certain medical reasons like pregnancy and chronic pain. Sublocade is administered by a healthcare provider subcutaneously in the abdomen every 28 days.

Medication: Only One Piece To The Puzzle

It is important to remember medication alone will not be enough to keep you sober, it is only one piece to the puzzle. Commitment to your recovery and participation in outpatient services, therapy, step programs, or any of the fellowships are crucial to success in recovery.

RBH believes in providing a variety of options for recovery, knowing that every individual needs different tools for success and MAT is just one of those tools.
