Treating Depression

At Retreat, we recognize that approaches to depression treatment must be individualized to every patient, and we work hard to ensure that our therapeutic programs are optimized to each of our patient’s needs.

We provide a wide range of therapies with proven benefits for patients battling depression. These include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychotherapy (talk therapy), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Sessions are offered both one-on-one and in groups, and are often combined with our other therapeutic specialties, such as mindfulness, yoga, art and music therapy, equine therapy, and more.

What is Depression?

Major depressive disorder is about more than just feeling down. The illness, classified as a mood disorder, is characterized by severe, often debilitating sadness, a lack of energy, and a loss of interest in relationships and other things in life that previously caused pleasure. And it’s incredibly common—estimates suggest that more than 16 million Americans are affected by major depressive disorder, making it the most common mental health disorder in the US.

Effects of Depression

The effects of depression can impact an individual in varied and extreme ways. From loss of appetite and sleep disturbances to excessive irritability, social isolation, and suicidal ideations, depression bleeds into all areas of an individual’s life and can be difficult to control. For many people, it takes a series of trials and errors to figure out what works in controlling their depression. For some, antidepressant medications may be required in addition to therapy, as well as distinct lifestyle changes.

As a leading provider of behavioral healthcare services, we have years of experience working with patients to address and overcome their mental health issues. We help patients deal with their depression on an individual level, building up tools that they can carry with them throughout their lives to combat depressive episodes and see themselves through to the other side. We also help patients and their loved ones learn to acknowledge and discuss the symptoms of depression, and offer crucial support for both groups so that they may be better prepared to address these episodes when they do occur.

It is important to note that depression cannot be cured in the traditional sense. While it is certainly possible to alleviate symptoms, and some patients do manage to avoid future depressive episodes, for many depression treatment is a lifelong journey and best approached with support from family and friends. We encourage all individuals who suffer from depression to be open about their mental health struggles with their loved ones and to notify their support system of any signs that may suggest they need professional help.
